We Are All One

“For ages this idea has been proclaimed in the consummately wise teachings of religion, probably not alone as a means of insuring peace and harmony among men, but as a deeply founded truth. The Buddhist expresses it in one way, the Christian in another, but both say the same: We are all one”
-Nikola Tesla

     I want you to think about the nature of the reality you are living in right now. You are a sentient being, made up of the same atoms as the world around us. All of life on this planet is like a thin layer of moss on an enormous rock hurtling through space at truly unimaginable speed. The oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and other atoms that make up our body is derived from the world around us, and when we die it returns to where it came from. The atoms themselves are 99.99% empty space, making solid matter more of an illusion held together by electromagnetic forces.
Right about now you may be saying “Yea, that’s cool and all, but why the hell does it matter to me?”
     Given what science has taught us about the nature of matter and how the world, and our bodies, are constructed, there is true evidence to bolster the philosophical statement that “we are all one”. Truly break it down and tell me you don’t agree with that statement. We are all made of the same atoms, we derive those atoms from our surroundings, we are constantly moving those atoms back and forth between each other and our surroundings through bodily processes such as eating, drinking, sweating and breathing. Our bodies are constantly being replaced by materials from the world around us, and the barriers between our “separate” bodies and the world around us are merely just different arrangements of matter that are almost entirely void spaces. If you were to zoom in far enough, or zoom out far enough, the reality of “separateness” from each other and our surroundings begins to break down.
Okay so we are all one, one big pile of teeming organic mass made up of 99.99% emptiness held together by forces that we still don’t truly understand. Again, why does this matter to me?
     The more you realize our separateness is an illusion, the more you start to realize the powerful connection we have with each other and our world. Why would you want to cause harm to someone else, knowing that you are harming part of yourself? Why would you want to harm the world around you, knowing that you are only destroying the system that brought you into existence and continues to support your life?
     So many problems we face on this planet are caused by the loss of this truth. We separate each other into categories, based off of such petty differences like the color of our skin. We torture and kill animals, forgetting that they are our family and holding on to the foolish notion that we were created separately from them, while it has been proven that we are built by the same DNA, made from the same atoms, only branches apart on the tree of life.
     You don’t have to be an atheist to agree with me, you can believe that a God created us and the world together, all part of the same growing, interchanging system. When you take the view that we are separate from the world, that we hold dominion over the planet we arise from, that is when you take the side of hubris over reason.
     I truly believe the next great evolution in mankind will be an awakening of our minds to the reality of our connections. We have been consumed so long by a tribal mentality of us vs. them, a fear based way of life driven by scarcity and competition and the horribly unfortunate notion that this world is merely a small stage before an endless afterlife. This leads us to do unspeakable horrors to each other and to the world that we come from. We need to break down the barriers between each other and get rid of the idea that an Armageddon is inevitable. We need to constantly counter this animosity, fear, hatred, greed, violence and selfishness. At all times in your life you need to focus your mind and your actions on the truth of our reality; we are all one, what we do to one another and the world around us, we do to ourselves.
     Don’t dismiss this argument, or just blindly agree, nodding your head and then forgetting the message the next second. Take this message and implement it into your daily actions. Be kind to one another. Help not only your family and friends but go help a stranger. Volunteer your time. Talk to someone who is very different from you, learn from them, debate with them without letting anger cloud your discovery of new ways of thought.
Help nature, defend nature, do what you can to lessen the damage you cause to the world that your body is constantly drawing from.
Be mindful of what you eat and what you feed others.
Be mindful of how you treat others.
Always be aware of the fact that all of life is one system of interconnected parts, and there is no separating yourself from that.
Your existence will always be dependent on others and the world in which we live.
 Always strive to remember that our separations are merely an illusion, holding us back from realizing the truth of this reality that we live in;
We Are All One
